Hogwarts: A Dark Legacy Rumors Explained

06/29/20 ORIGINAL POST: Since 2018 rumors have been floating around about a Harry Potter RPG. Over the years the expectations and hype for the game have bubbled up and popped with new "leaks" surfacing every year with no official announcement. And while the development status of the game has not yet become official, new reports from Bloomberg shine a light on what to expect and when to expect it.

This new information, which supposedly comes from two people working on the game, suggests that it is being developed by Avalanche Software (which is not to be confused with Mad Max developer Avalanche Studios) and will be an open-world game set in the Harry Potter universe. Author of the book series, J.K. Rowling, is reportedly not too involved in the production of the game, which is surprising considering she wrote the last big Wizarding World release, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The game is expected to be released late 2021 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and will be announced at some point after DC FanDome where Warner Bros plan to announce their upcoming Batman game and possibly the rumored Suicide Squad game from Rocksteady Studios.

It's important to note that this news comes on the heel of leaks that surfaced on the Harry Potter subreddit less than a month ago. The Reddit user who made the post claims they work for WB Marketing and had details about a game that they say will be titled Hogwarts: A Dark Legacy. The name is a purposeful departure from Harry Potter and although some familiar names may make a cameo, the game will instead focus on a unique character the player creates. We talk about all these details at length on the newest episode of our podcast, but here are some of the most exciting ones.

You start the game as a 5th-year student transferring to Hogwarts. There is character customization at the start that will determine what house you will be in (though other rumors state that you will be able to choose your house). Each house will have its own storyline and quests, setting the game up to be replayable, and the player will have the freedom to explore four different areas including Hogwarts, The Ministry, and more. Due to the fact that the game is being labeled as an RPG, it should be no surprise that there will be an expansive skill tree, a good vs evil scale that sways based on player choices and dialogue options that will open up the possibility to romance companions.

A Dark Legacy will feature a darker and not "super kid-friendly" storyline which could be tonally similar to the last Harry Potter book and corresponding movies. In fact, the Reddit user says the game is so dark it may even be rated M, but that would be an unusual move considering an M rating will cut off a big part of the game's target audience. A few other things to note is that the game's antagonist is a former Death Eater and that the Hogwarts rival, the player's own Malfoy, will be generated using a modified version of the Nemesis system from the Middle-Earth games. Finally, fans of wizarding sports should rejoice because Quidditch is playable in the game.

Some of these details don't directly line up with the gameplay that IGN reported on in October of 2018, which suggests a game that would be set in the 19th century. This would open up to cameos from iconic characters like Dumbledore, who was attending Hogwarts as a student at the time, or one of Sirius Black's ancestors. This could be a result of the game-changing over the course of its development, as games often do, or it could mean one (or both) of the two sources are not entirely reliable.

Keep in mind that nothing is set in stone about this Bully set-in Hogwarts, but the recent influx of seemingly credible information suggests that next year we will see the most flushed out Wizarding World experience since the original books themselves.
