The Last of Us: Part II is the Fastest-Selling PlayStation Exclusive Ever

In the weeks leading up to launch, Naughty Dog's highly anticipated post-pandemic sequel, The Last of Us: Part II, faced a lot of criticism. After details of the plot leaked in April, the game became the center of a lot of drama with a vocal minority voicing their displeasure with the direction the game's narrative was headed. (click here to read more) This toxicity resurfaced on June 12 when the review embargo for the game lifted and the game received overwhelmingly positive reviews despite its fair share of valid criticisms.

Along with a flood of dislikes, those who spoke positively about the game prior to release received death threats and tasteless retorts that aren't worth repeating here. Then on the day of launch, once the Metacritic gates opened for user scores, the game was review bombed with thousands of low scores from gamers that never actually played the game. For context, God of War, which came out a little over 2 years ago, has roughly 14,000 user ratings and has a 9.1 score. The Last of Us: Part II received 14,000 ratings in less than 12 hours, a majority of which are not legitimate when you take into account the games 20 to 25-hour length. The game currently sits at a 4.6 score with over 87,000 user ratings. Needless to say, this raised some speculations regarding how the game would perform on the market.

Now, a week after the launch of the game, we have the official numbers. The Last of Us: Part II sold over 4 million copies during its opening weekend. This puts the game well above other PlayStation exclusive hits such as God of War, which sold 3.3 million copies in the same time frame, and Marvel's Spider-Man, which sold 3.5 million. This solidifies The Last of Us sequel as the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive on the PS4 by a healthy margin.

Via the most recent PlayStation blog post, in which this sales record was revealed, Director of Part II, Neil Druckmann shared the following statement:

"We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar."

The hot streak for PlayStation isn't over just yet. Their next exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima, is less than a month away and developer Sucker Punch has recently confirmed the game has gone Gold ahead of its July 17 release date. Personally speaking, I am nearing the end of Part II myself. And while I have a lot to say about, I will share them in another article in the coming weeks. (click here to read it now)
