Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game is Receiving a Physical Release on PS4 and Switch

On Friday, January 8th, 2021, it was announced via Twitter that a physical release of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game would be produced and sold by Limited Run Games in partnership with Ubisoft. Limited Run Games is a publisher and distributor of physical versions of digitally released games in limited quantities, as their name suggests.

Back in August of 2020, during a Ubisoft Forward presentation, a digital re-release of the game titled Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Complete Edition was announced to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the game and film of the same name.

There will be a six-week pre-order window in which you can secure one of the three separate editions of the game over at limitedrungames.com. Once the pre-order window closes, you will be at the mercy of scalpers and resellers if you want to get your hands on a copy. The editions available for pre-order are as follows:

  • Standard Edition - $34.99 (USD)
The standard version of the game comes with the physical copy of the game complete with reversible cover art, a full color manual, and a Clash at Demonhead concert ticket.

  • Classic Edition - $54.99 (USD)
The Classic Edition comes with everything in the standard version, plus a clamshell-style retro box, CD soundtrack, a folded overworld map, as well as a few sticker sheets.

  • KO Edition - $139.99 (USD)
The KO edition comes with all the above items in addition to a collector’s case with working lights and music depicting Scott and friends rocking out on a stage, a guide book, guitar picks, drum sticks, an animation card, enamel pin, a trading card set featuring the 7 evil exes, and another copy of the soundtrack this time on cassette.

According to Limited Run, this initial run will only be available on PS4 and Switch but they intend on releasing an Xbox One version of the game later in 2021.

For those who have never played the Scott Pilgrim game, it is a 2D retro-style beat-em-up where players can choose between a number of different playable characters, fight through seven different themed levels, and ultimately confront and best each of Ramona Flowers' seven evil exes. Fans of Castle Crashers or Streets of Rage should feel right at home playing Scott Pilgrim. Amazing sprite designs, tight controls, and a fantastic soundtrack created by chiptune band Anamanaguchi are some of the various reasons this game has received a massive cult following in the years since its initial release.

The game was co-developed by Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Chengdu in close partnership with the original series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley and even film director Edgar Wright who at the time was behind the film adaptation.

This fun news comes at the end of many fans requesting for the game to be brought back in a playable state after being delisted from all digital stores in 2014, where, at the time, a digital download was the only way to play the game.

For years after its delisting, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game became somewhat of a poster child for those advocating for the continuation of physical releases of games. While the industry has shown signs of transitioning to an all-digital future, many were keen to point out that situations similar to the original game’s delisting would become more common, and more games could just disappear with no legal way existing for more people to play and experience them.

Ultimately, this physical release is exciting news for not only Scott Pilgrim fans but also stands as a win for games preservation and hopefully sends a nice message to other companies that preserving their games and history for future generations is a worthwhile investment.
